Glitch Almanac Publication 2024

This interdisciplinary work emerges from poet Katy Lewis Hood’s responses to Martina O’Brien’s durational artwork of ephemeral measure. Between 2021 and 2023, O’Brien installed twelve digital cameras in different locations in Contae Chill Dara / County Kildare. Engaging with scientific practices of phenology (the observation of periodic/cyclical ecological processes) and the increasing use of technology to collect environmental data amid intensifying climate change, of ephemeral measure took a DIY approach to environmental sensing and monitoring. Katy Lewis Hood’s sequence of poems responds to O’Brien’s project through experimental poetic methods, attending to the glitches and poetic possibilities of digital mediation, colonial environmental histories in Ireland, and remote and embodied practices of environmental knowledge and care. The publication consists of: a prose-poem essay; a sequence of 15 poems by Katy Lewis Hood, interspersed with 13 gridded images from Martina O’Brien’s of ephemeral measure.

of ephemeral measure: Volume 1

‘Volume 1’ was created and published on the occasion of of ephemeral measure’s first milestone. The images and essays within the book explore sensors as image-makers, the durational and off-grid aspects to the project, how the continual capturing of images can contribute to understanding ecologies and climate change, and O’Brien’s decisions around steering clear of directly engaging big data centres in the work.

Publication contributors included Martina O’Brien, artist Sean Lynch, and Dr. Alison Donnelly, Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The publication and project is kindly supported by Creative Ireland through Kildare County Council Arts Service.
